Pakistan urged a joint investigation of a missile launched into its territory by India, rejecting New Delhi’s decision to conduct an internal investigation and appealing to the international community to help.
In a statement, Pakistan’s foreign ministry stated, “Such a serious problem cannot be dealt with the basic explanation supplied by the Indian authorities.”
“Pakistan wants a joint investigation into the incident’s facts,” the statement said.
After Pakistan warned New Delhi of “unpleasant repercussions,” India stated on Friday that it had unintentionally launched the missile into Pakistan this week due to a “technical fault” during normal maintenance.
The international community must play its “proper role in fostering stability in a nuclearized environment,” according to a statement from Pakistan’s foreign office, which also warned of “dire repercussions” if either side’s misreading leads to an escalation.
Military experts have previously warned of the dangers of mishaps or miscalculations on the part of the nuclear-armed neighbors, who have fought three wars and a slew of smaller armed conflicts, mostly over the disputed region of Kashmir.
Tensions have subsided in recent months, but the occurrence, which may be the first of its sort, aroused immediate concerns about safety measures.
