Haji Salim's parliamentary seat is threatened by his arrest | Bangladesh News | NewsRme

Haji Mohammad Salim surrendered to court after a High Court judgment affirmed his 10-year incarceration in a wealth case, placing him at danger of losing his parliamentary seat.
Article 66 of the constitution disqualifies anybody who has been convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude and sentenced to at least two years in jail, unless five years have passed since his release.

Sayeed Ahmed Raza, the Dhaka-7 MP’s lawyer, said he expects his client’s membership would stay intact till the dispute is resolved. He stated the defense would appeal.

Khurshid Alam Khan, attorney for the Anti-Corruption Commission that launched the investigation 15 years ago, said Salim forfeited the ability to be a member of parliament for “moral turpitude.”

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will decide. The ACC sends the judgment to the authorities, he said.

Shirin said bdnews24.com following Salim’s surrender that parliament must be notified before making a decision. “We won’t address it until we’re properly told,” she stated.

An unnamed Parliament Secretariat official remarked, “It’s too soon to comment on Haji Salim.” The High Court may grant him bail. First, solve those issues.”

A month before the High Court affirmed the decision against Haji Salim, parliament withdrew Mohammad Shahid Islam alias Kazi Papul’s membership following his four-year prison sentence for people trafficking and money laundering
