#BREAKING: #BNNIndia Reports.

Police said on Sunday that 14 Hindu temples in northwest Bangladesh were vandalized by unknown people in a series of attacks that took place overnight.

“Unknown people attacked at night and broke idols in 14 temples in three unions,” said Bidyanath Barman, a leader of the Hindu community in Baliadangi “upazila” or “sub-district” in Thakurgaon.

Barman, who is the general secretary of the Puja Celebration Council for the upazila, said that some of the idols were destroyed and others were found in ponds near the temples. The barman said, “We don’t know who they (the people who did this) are, but we want to bring them to justice once we find out.”

Samar Chattarjee, a leader of the Hindu community and the head of the union parishad, said that the area has always been known as a place where people of different faiths get along well because “nothing like this has ever happened here before.”

The (mostly) Muslim community has no problem with us (Hindus) “We just don’t know who these bad guys could be,” he said.

The officer in charge of the Baliadangi police station, Khairul Anam, said that the attacks took place in several villages between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

At one of the temple sites, Thakurgaon’s police chief, Jahangir Hossain, told reporters, “It looks like a well-planned attack meant to upset the peace in the country.”

He also said that a police investigation was started right away to find the bad guys. “I promise they will have to face serious legal consequences,” he said.

This (attack) is the result of a plot against peace and unity among people. “This is a serious crime, and the people who did it will have to answer for it,” said Mahbubur Rahman, who is the administrative head of Thakurgaon.
