'India's proposed criminal law codes can modernise justice, if they begin with police first'

The government has proposed replacements for India’s 19th century Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code Of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), and Indian Evidence Act, 1872. The new codes won’t bring Indian criminal justice into the modern age, though, unless colonial-era acts governing the country’s police are replaced with laws that ensure accountability to the people.
