Preparations started pretty early on Friday. Members of St. Thomas Orthodox church (both male and female members) gathered in the compound to clean and cut vegetables. They are making things ready for Shankar Swamy who will be cooking kanji, puzhukku, and avial for the famous Kallitta Perunaal.

St. Thomas Orthodox Church in Kottayam is also famous as Kottayam Kurishupally. Here, in the church they celebrate Kallitta Perunal (foundation day) during the monsoon season in Kerala (karkidaka maasam). During this festival, the church provides Kanji (congee), puzhukku (mixed vegetable curry), and manga achaar (mango pickle) for all those who visit the church. The church practices this custom for centuries now, but for the last 10 years it is Shankar Swamy who prepares the food here. We joined Shankar swamy and his team to experience the preparation. Moreover, the church vicar and its members were very friendly. They explained history and unwritten stories related to the church and kallitta perunal.
