Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri is an Indian tabla player, and is considered to be one of the all time greats. He took lessons in the tabla from his guru Pt Santosh Krishna Biswas, an eminent exponent of the Lucknow gharana. His spontaneous expression, ingenuity and in-depth knowledge has helped form a distinctive personal style of playing the tabla. Pt Chaudhuri’s clarity and elegance, both as an accompanist and as a soloist, has brought him much renown the world over. His excursions beyond the realm of classical music resulted in exciting recordings with Stevie Wonder, L. Shankar, Mark O’Connor, John Handy, Larry Coryell, John Santos, the reputed Persian musicians Alizade and KayhanKalhor, the African drum master Malenga, and the renowned guitarists Vlatko Stefanovski and Miroslav Tadic, among others.
Pt Chaudhari has had the privilege of sharing the stage with stellar Indian classical musicians, including, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Bhimshen Joshi, Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and many more. He has composed for several percussion ensembles which have received global appreciation.Pt Chaudhuri has been Director of Percussion at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California, and Basel, Switzerland, and Department Chairperson for the World Music Department at California Institute of Arts, LA.
At the Bengal Classical Music Festival held in Dhaka in 2013, Pt Swapan Chaudhuri gave a scintillating solo performance in the tabla and mesmerized the audience with his sheer brilliance and mastery.
