Bangladesh is a broad deltaic plain subject to frequent flooding, with a small hilly region in the south-eastern side. The country has an area of 144,000 square kilometers and extends 820 kilometers north to south and 600 kilometers east to west.

The country shares its borders with India on 3 sides, i.e. west, north and north-east and with Myanmar (previously known as Burma) on the south-eastern side. On the south side is the Bay of Bengal, a part of the Indian Ocean.
