It’s a truly amazing sight – frightening too. Field, after field, thousands upon thousands of acres, a veritable sea of opium poppies. This is Afghanistan, which now produces more than three-quarters of the world’s heroin and it’s all so brazen, right under the noses of 11,000 American troops. They argue their war is a war on terror not drugs. So this season’s crop is on its way to the West, to kids in countries like Australia. And as Richard Carleton found, no-one in Afghanistan will stop it. And why would they, when opium provides half of this battered country’s income?
