Protesters, police clash in Bangladesh over India PM Modi's visit

Hundreds of demonstrators protesting against the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi clashed with police in the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka on Friday.

The violence escalated with protesters throwing projectiles, while police fired rubber bullets, threw projectiles, and deployed water cannons in the area near the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

The protesters accuse Modi of stoking religious tensions, according to local media reports, which added that 40 people were injured from Friday’s clash.

In his first visit to a foreign country since the coronavirus outbreak, Modi will be in Bangladesh for two days, where he will take part in the National Day celebrations of the country as the guest of honour.
