The first mobile operator in Bangladesh – CITYCELL might be closing its operation in August. The company has produced some of the finest advertisements Bangladeshi TV viewers ever watched. One of them is this one with the signature tune of CityCell. This is a sad incident for Bangladesh mobile phone industry.
With its ambition to get ahead of competitors – CityCell chose a technology which ultimately brought failure to them. CDMA 1x was way ahead in terms of technological advancements compared to GSM technology at its time. But unfortunately being the only one to adopt CDMA technology left CityCell out of the competition. Because subscribers had no option to switch – as none of the operators used CDMA technology – leaving their handsets of no use.
