From being 69-6 at the end of the 19th over to finishing the scoreboard at 271-7 after the full quota of overs this has been an innings to script in the history books of Bangladesh cricket. In what was presumed to be a batting-friendly park🏟 the Bangladesh top-order batters seemed to have turned the results upside down within the first 20 overs. But wait🤫the pitch got better as the game progressed and the collaboration of Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mahmudullah Riyad helped Bangladesh reach a formidable total in the end.

It wasn’t a rosy 90 minutes for the Bangladesh batters at the start as the wonkiness of the pitch shadowed their batting capabilities. Mohammed Siraj was the one to draw the first blood as an in-seamer followed by a couple of out-jaggers. Anamul was wrapped at the front pad and he lead to a loss in review.

Soon we got to witness some fearsome stares from Mohammed Siraj at Najmul Hossain Shanto and followed him with some breathtaking deliveries. Siraj uprooted the off peg of Litton Das and soon Umran Malik cartwheeled the poles of Shanto. In between the two wickets Umran Malik hurried Shakib with monotonous bumpers and the veteran allrounder’s skull-protector took some nasty damage.

Washington Sundar made full use of this building pressure by wreaking three wickets. The spine of the hosts seemed to have fragmented but Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mahmudullah Riyad had some other plans. The duo troubled the Indian bowlers for long and managed that the scoreboard keeps on ticking. Both Mahmudullah and Mehidy were watchful in their initial hours and fetched some boundaries at brisk intervals.

As the clock ticked by the run-scoring graph took a steep curve upward. The amalgam of Mehidy and Mahmudullah broke a lot of partnerships on this day and managed to stitch a partnership of 148 runs together. Be it the pacers or be it the spinners all of them were handled with maturity. Umran Malik shattered the coalition but the Indian bowling failed to run through the tail. Nasum Ahmed came in and played a threatening cameo and propelled some quick runs.

Make no mistake Bangladesh haven’t lost an ODI series at home since October 2016. A win today will help them maintain that proud record and with the ODI World Cup fast approaching they couldn’t have asked for better opponents to play against. The last wicket match-winning partnership in the first game not only emphasized the tenacious attitude in the Bangladesh set-up but it also reaffirmed the prodigious all-round talent of Mehidy Hasan Miraz. As for India they will be keen to better their approach against spin and perhaps a change in approach during the middle overs.

Pitch report: “There was grip turn and bounce for the spinners in the first game. Today we are playing on pitch number 8. It’s a lot more brown. Could allow the batters a bit more time in playing their strokes. Still a good pitch to bat on but you need to apply yourselves like KL and Litton did in the first game” reckons Anjum Chopra.

“We just didn’t have enough runs. Another 25-30 runs would have helped. We were looking at 240-250 after the 25-over mark. When you keep losing wickets it is difficult” a disappointed Rohit Sharma said after the last game. Indeed the conditions were slightly tricky but India’s greater worry could be the lack of significant contributions from the top four which could be a key area of focus in today’s game. Shikhar Dhawan’s strike-rate has also been under heavy scrutiny in the last 12-14 months and the senior pro would definitely want to reverse those stats sooner rather than later.
