Good morning everyone! Hello and a warm welcome to our coverage of the second day’s play of the First Test Match of this 2-Test match series featuring the hosts Bangladesh against the visitors India from the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. It was an absorbing first day in Chattogram and at the end of the first day’s play the game is evenly poised with no team having their noses in front at this stage. It sets up Day 2 beautifully.
Opting to bat first India got off to a steady start courtesy of their openers Shubman Gill and skipper KL Rahul. The duo put on 41 for the first wicket in 13.2 overs before Gill gave his wicket away to Taijul Islam for 20. Skipper KL Rahul followed his opening partner back to the hut as he fell for 22 dragging on a Khaled Ahmed delivery. Virat Kohli came and went early for 1 leaving India in trouble at 48/3 in the morning session. Thereafter Rishabh Pant counter-attacked the Bangladeshi bowlers and got to 46 off 45 balls before falling to Mehidy Hasan Miraz and leaving India in a spot of bother at 112/4.
It was the Cheteshwar Pujara-Shreyas Iyer show from thereon. The duo weathered the early storm and tight bowling from Bangladesh and then got on top of the bowling. Both rode their luck but managed to stitch a crucial 149-run stand for the fifth wicket. Pujara looked good until he got a beauty from Taijul Islam as he fell short of his 100 by 10 runs. He fell for 90 off 203 balls. Axar Patel fell late in the day as he fell for 14 off 26 balls to Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the final ball of the day. All eyes will be on Shreyas Iyer who is still unbeaten on 82* off 169 balls. He has been given reprieves by Bangladeshi fielders but as they say luck favors the brave. So India ended Day 1 with the score reading 278/6 with the help of three extras given by the Bangladeshi bowlers. They have been disciplined with the ball.
Pitch Report (Anjum Chopra) Day 2: “It’s been a good pitch to bat on and coming today you will see that the ball is moving around and turning in. There are a few marks that are expected. There is turn and bounce and that creates doubt in the batter’s mind. So as a batter go to the front foot and play well. Playing on the back foot could be tricky here. So a fascinating day’s play awaits us all.”
The first hour will be crucial for both teams. India will aim to negotiate the first hour and score above 350. Bangladesh on the other hand will be eyeing to get early wickets and keep India down under 350. Shreyas Iyer will resume his innings and will be joined by Ravichandran Ashwin when play gets underway today. This match can go either way and today could give us an indication as to where this Test is headed.
After deciding to bat first India started steadily as the openers KL Rahul and Shubman Gill added 41 runs for the first wicket. But India lost three quick wickets in the span of 7 runs. Both openers played false shots and threw away the start they got. While Gill (20 off 40) was out playing an unnecessary paddle to Taijul Islam Rahul (22 off 54) played away from the body and chopped one on the stumps in the bowling of Khaled Ahmed. Taijul didn’t stop here as he trapped Virat Kohli (1 off 5) dead plumb infront of the stumps. At stumps Shreyas Iyer was unbeaten 82 off 169 deliveries and it should be Ravichandran Ashwin walking out to bat Today!
