Padma Setu is a multipurpose road and rail bridge under construction over the Padma River in Bangladesh. Through this, Shariatpur and Madaripur will be connected with Lauhjong, Munshiganj, thereby connecting the north-eastern part with the south-western part of the country. For a developing country like Bangladesh, Padma Bridge is going to be one of the most challenging construction projects in its history. The two-tiered steel and concrete truss bridge will have a four-lane carriageway on the upper tier and a single rail track on the lower tier. 41 spans of 150 meters length will sit on the Padma-Brahmaputra-Meghna river basin, the largest bridge in the country is being constructed with a length of 6.150 km and a width of 18.10 meters. It was supposed to be opened for vehicular traffic by the end of 2020 as per the government plan, but it did not happen. The project will cover three districts – Munshiganj (Mawa Point / North Bank), Shariatpur and Madaripur (Janjira / South Bank). The total land required and acquired for this is 918 hectares. The land required for construction will be acquired over the next six years on the basis of rent.
The World Bank withdrew its pledge after allegations of corruption by some involved in project preparation, and other donors followed suit. However, the corruption allegations were later proven false and Canadian courts later dismissed the case due to lack of evidence. At present the project is being financed from the own resources of the Government of Bangladesh. AECOM-designed multi-faceted socio-economic development project ‘Padma Multi-Bridge’ on the Padma River was scheduled to begin construction in 2011 and to be completed in 2013. The original project was planned by the former caretaker government on August 28, 2007 when the much-discussed Tk 10,161 crore Padma Bridge project was passed. Later, the Awami League government came and revised the cost of the bridge in the first phase on January 11, 2011 by connecting the railway. At that time, its cost was estimated at 20 thousand 507 crores. The cost of the Padma Bridge was increased by another eight thousand crore rupees. As a result, the total cost of Padma Bridge is 28 thousand 793 crores.
Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BASEC) invited pre-qualification tenders for the project in April 2010. Construction of the bridge was scheduled to begin in early 2011 and major works would be completed by 2013 (all work to be completed by the end of 2015). The proposed Padma multi-purpose bridge project will provide a direct link to the south-western part of the country with the center through a fixed route through the Mawa-Jazira point. This bridge will significantly contribute to the social, economic and industrial development of the relatively underdeveloped region.
