Giant Launches and Ships in Bangladesh – Taking the Ferry from Dhaka to Chandpur

I’m never happier than when I’m on a boat on a river journey. And Bangladesh offers up countless opportunities for such journeys – long ones and short ones. It’s a country of 700 rivers, after all. I’ve been on the Buriganga River in tiny boats and medium-sized boats, but I really wanted to go for a trip on one of the massive river launches.

I realized that a great option is to take one of the huge launches from Sadarghat Terminal in Dhaka to Chandpur. Chandpur is only three and a half hours away, and a launch leaves every hour all day long. Chandpur has many hotels, and I could stay there overnight. Or I could visit Chandpur and return to Dhaka that same day.

That was my plan when I left my hotel in the morning. I brought toiletries and other stuff in case I decided to spend the night. And I kept my hotel room in Dhaka so that I could just come back if I wanted to.

And when I boarded my awesome launch to Chandpur, I discovered that when it comes to river travel in Bangladesh, you can’t beat the prices. It’s a tremendous value. Deck class for this 3-hour journey will set you back just 100 taka, which is slightly over one dollar US. Spring for a private cabin, and it will cost you just six or seven dollars. An Uber from the airport to Old Dhaka will cost you more than that.

So, come with me on this epic journey and see what you can get for as little as a dollar. It has to be one of the best bargains on the planet.
