Five people have been shot on the platform of a New York City subway during their Tuesday morning commute and several undetonated devices have been discovered at the scene.

One of those shot is in a critical condition, according to reports.

New York’s fire department said it responded to reports of smoke and discovered the gunshot victims and the undetonated devices at the station in the Sunset Park neighbourhood of Brooklyn.

Police officers told local news outlets that a man dressed in clothing that resembled that of a subway worker threw an unknown device and opened fire on passengers.

Some of the wounded jumped on another train to flee to the next station, police sources told NBC New York.

Graphic images posted on social media appeared to show the gunshot victims and a station platform smeared in blood. No further details have been released about the devices.
