Ancient Mosques in Bangladesh – Part 03 – বাংলার শতবর্ষী মসজিদ | Bangla Travel Vlog

In this episode of my Travel Vlog of Ancient Mosques in Bangladesh, let me take you to yet another ancient mosque and a historical installation.

Approximately, this 500 year old mosque is known as “Bakshi Hamid Jam-e Masjid”. Despite its age, the mosque still is surviving in its glory. It is located in Bashkhali, a coastal Upazila on the Bay of Bengal in Chittagong district of Bangladesh.

The historic installation came to the fore last year during a visit by Mr. Jean-Marin Schuh, the French Ambassador to Bangladesh with his wife and also Mr. Eric Chevallier, the Director of The Crisis and Support Center in France.

Where is Ivan was planning to visit this historical structure for quite a while and suddenly, the opportunity arrived when a dear brother of mine, Shafiq, whom everyone knows as Sam FPV, one of the most popular FPV drone pilots in Bangladesh agreed to accompany me on this journey. Shafiq is responsible for all the great workmanship behind the cameras and drones in this episode. I wish him love and continued success.

The Bengali translation of what was written in Arabic in the inscription on the mosque was almost something like – ‘This holy mosque is the pillar of the nation and religion. Built during the reign of Sultan Emperor Solomon. May Allah protect him from all worldly calamities. 9th Ramadan 975 AH (156 AD)’.

According to the locals, the mosque is estimated to be some 575 years old. According to online and other sources, the installation is about 450 years old. According to historians, the mosque was built in the village of Baharchhara, Ilsha during the reign of Pathan Sultan Suleiman of Bengal from 1585-62 AD.

This mosque is a witness of history and tradition of Baharchhara Union of Banshkhali upazila. If you want to visit this mosque built with Mughal architectural style, first you have to go to Gunagari Khasmahal Bazaar in Banshkhali. From there it’s only a few kilometers journey by motor rickshaw or CNG directly in front of the mosque.
