তুরাগ নামের নদীটি গাজীপুর জেলাধীন কালিয়াকৈর উপজেলার প্রবহমান বংশী নদী থেকে উৎপত্তি লাভ করে ঢাকা জেলার সাভার উপজেলার বিরুলিয়া ইউনিয়নে এসে দুটি ধারায় বিভাজিত হয়েছে। এর একটি শাখা সাভার উপজেলার কাউন্দিয়া ইউনিয়নে বংশী নদীতে এবং মূল শাখাটি আমিনবাজার ইউনিয়ন পর্যন্ত প্রবাহিত হয়ে বুড়িগঙ্গা নদীতে পতিত হয়েছে।

অর্থাৎ এটি বংশী নদীর শাখা। সে হিসেবে এটি কালিয়াকৈর, জয়দেবপুর, মির্জাপুর, গাজীপুর, সাভার, মিরপুর দিয়ে প্রবাহিত হয়ে মোহাম্মদপুর থানা এলাকায় বুড়িগঙ্গায় মিলিত হয়েছে। তুরাগ নদ সর্পিলভাবে প্রবেশ করে প্রথমে কিছুটা পূর্ব দিকে অগ্রসর হয়ে তারপর বুড়িগঙ্গায় পড়েছে। টঙ্গীখাল তুরাগ নদে মিলিত হয়েছে মিরপুরের উত্তরে। তুরাগের ছোট একটি শাখা কালিয়াকৈরের কাছ থেকে উৎপন্ন হয়ে কড্ডা এলাকার মধ্য দিয়ে প্রবাহিত হয়ে দক্ষিণে টঙ্গী খালে পড়েছে। স্থানীয়ভাবে এই শাখাকেও তুরাগ নদ বলে। সম্প্রতি নদীটিকে জীবন্ত সত্তা হিসেবে ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে। সারা বছরই নদটি নৌকা চলাচলের উপযোগী। গ্রীষ্মে ক্ষীণকায় হয়ে পড়লেও তুরাগ একটি সক্রিয় নদ। যমুনা নদীর অবক্ষেপ প্রায় সুদূর টঙ্গী খাল পর্যন্ত তুরাগের উপত্যকা জুড়ে রয়েছে। ১৯৫০ সালের আসাম ভূমিকম্পের পর এমন ঘটেছে। এই নদীতীরে মির্জাপুর, কাশিমপুর, ধীতপুর, বিরুলিয়া, উয়ালিয়া, বনগাঁ প্রভৃতি স্থান অবস্থিত।
