Mathbaria’s Supelaja Kuthurbari: About two hundred years ago, the British Farajullah, who was in the area, gave him 14 bighas of land in the area. The house was built in 14 bighas of land. Each year, the festival was a festival in the cottage at the end of the month. Then the people would like to be in the festival.
Edward Parry Caspar, an English zamindar, built a mansion at the beginning of the 18th century. Caspar’s mansion was built on a quarter of an acre of land. The main building of the Kuthibari was built in the traditional style of British architecture, extending up to two storeys on 16 square arches. At present there is nothing left in the Kuthibari except the undeveloped main building, the broken paved ghat of the pond and the three dilapidated buildings that have been destroyed. Many valuable old-fashioned trees in the courtyard have been cut down. It is said that the representative of the then British government Mr. Caspar accidentally came to Mathbaria and during his visit to Sapleja, the local rich Farazullah gave him the land as a gift to honor him. Periskaspers built a house on this land. Caspar’s estate was later expanded here. He then built a two-story building to stay here. In addition, Naib built another building for Pike pedestrians. He used to sit in the office room on the ground floor of the two-storey building and conduct rent collection and justice in the area. Edward Periskaspers had a big boat. He used to come to Kuthibari from the then Chandradeep (now Barisal) in winter by this boat. After collecting the rent of the area, he would leave again at the end of winter. Since he stayed here during the winter, the building was specially built to keep him warm. Coal fires were set up in the four corners of the base of the main building. The whole house was hot. In the presence of Paris Caspar, every year at the end of the month of Poush, on the occasion of the festival of Punyah in Kuthibari, various programs were organized to entertain the people including the collection of rent. Among these were magic exhibitions, folk songs, jatras and the Nimai Sannyasi Pala. It is said that the accused were punished with a pair of shoes the size of a quarter of a hand for various crimes. After the partition of India in 1947, when the British left, the buildings and properties came under the control of the then government. The entire two-storey part of the main building was demolished for unknown reasons. Then the valuable goods kept in this part become very valuable. At present the house stands in a state of neglect with a tradition of two hundred years. Although Mr. Casper’s house is now abandoned, the Sapleja Post Office bearing his father’s name is still known as Shilarganj Post Office. When Bangladesh became independent in 1971, the government renovated Mr. Caspar’s main house and started the work of tehsil office in the two-storey building to collect land rent with tin rice.
